Beautiful Girls is hands-down my favourite movie of all time. I absolutely love it and dig it out every winter for a refresher. Insane cast (Natalie Portman, Matt Dillon, Uma Thurman, Timothy Hutton, Michael Rapaport), great soundtrack, and priceless scenes like this:

Bonus points if you grew up in a small town and moved away after high school. This movie will remind you of every trip back home.

I saw The American over the weekend and really liked it. A few days later, I’m really starting to love it, especially for the fact that it didn’t follow the usual beats and pacing of a typical assassin movie. Instead, it slowly pulls you into the monotony and constant paranoia of actually doing something like this for a living. This morning, I listened to a great Slate Spoiler Special podcast about this film, where they nicely compared it to a modern-day Western — stranger shows up in a small town, his only friends are a priest and a prostitute, and it all ends with an in-broad-daylight shootout. Ah, takes me back to my own assassin days …
