tonight ///

I love solid albums that I can listen to end-to-end without wanting to skip a track or two, and Lykke Li’s Youth Novels is exactly that. Plus, if you can write something as beautifully heart-breaking as Tonight, you have my full respect.

video games ///

Lana Del Rey‘s questionable SNL performance made me realize that I kind of don’t care anymore who makes the music I listen to. That’s not to say that I no longer love, or listen to, a lot of music; but in the age of mashups and auto-tune, one person writing the song, another singing it, and ten others marketing it, does it really matter? For all I know, Video Games could have been produced by the CERN hadron collider, and it doesn’t change the fact that I think the song’s beautiful.

the fear ///

On a recent shopping trip, the in-store music caught my attention, and (thanks to Shazam) I now have Lily Allen‘s The Fear on my iPod. I like it — reminds me a bit of the Pet Shop Boys.

i will follow you into the dark ///

I found out a while back that Jamie Thraves directed some of my all-time favourite music videos, including Radiohead’s Just and Coldplay’s The Scientist. And now, to add a third to the list, here’s his video for one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking songs I’ve ever heard, I Will Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab For Cutie — a brilliant illustration of someone coming to terms with loss. Can’t wait to see more from Mr. Thraves.

If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the “no”s on their vacancy signs
If there’s no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I’ll follow you into the dark

track : I Will Follow You Into The Dark
artist : Death Cab For Cutie
album : Plans

the scientist ///

A few months ago, I wrote about my all-time favourite music video, Radiohead’s Just, and found out that its director, Jamie Thraves, was also responsible for Coldplay‘s video for The Scientist. And so, I am now officially a big fan of Mr. Thraves’ unique gift to tell a brilliant, heartbreaking story that ties into the song’s lyrics, without being too literal or heavy-handed. And, thanks to Wikipedia, I’ll be writing shortly about a third video from Jamie’s portfolio, for one of the loveliest, most heartfelt songs I’ve ever heard.

dog days are over ///

Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine is an amazing song delivered by a beautiful hurricane of a voice coming to tear the roof off your house (and probably leaving a perfectly-worded note pinned to your front door in its wake).

She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled

track : Dog Days Are Over
artist : Florence + The Machine
album : Lungs

just ///

A few posts back, I wrote about Street Spirit by Radiohead, and thought I’d follow up with Just, a brilliant song with an absolutely genius video. Directed by Jamie Thraves, it tells one of the best stories I’ve ever seen in just over four minutes. Like I said, pure genius. Please watch, love, and repeat.

track : Just
artist : Radiohead
album : The Bends

street spirit ///

Another beautiful video by Mr. Jonathan Glazer. This one, for Radiohead’s Street Spirit, from The Bends; one of those rare albums that, from beginning to end, is a brilliant piece of artwork as a whole.

track : Street Spirit (Fade Out)
artist : Radiohead
album : The Bends

go! ///

Not only is Common one cool customer who knows how to dress, he also makes great music with lyrics like these:

Freaky like the daughter of a pastor
Said I was bait for her to master
Little red corvette now she was faster

track : GO!
artist : Common
album : Be

sure thing ///

Every man needs a strutting song. Tony Manero had his, and this is mine.
